This is Oh My Blog:
A monthly blogging series that allows you to meet a fellow blogger and get their opinions on a whole host of topics. Since its July, there’s no better time to start talking about holidays, sunshine and getaways and this month, it’s the turn of Debbie from My Chaotically Eclectic Life.
Summer is here! Are you going (or have you been) anywhere nice this year?
We’ve recently come back from a week in Majorca which was lovely and we are now in the process of planning our next getaway. We’re hoping to fit in a couple of long weekends through the school holidays assuming my OH can get the time off work and we have the available funds.
Where is your favourite Summer holiday destination?
I love Greece and the Greek Islands. I love the weather, the history and the food.
I also love America and would love go back again one day.
Do you prefer to spend your summer abroad or in the UK?
Definitely abroad, if only for the weather. I love exploring the UK but packing for our changeable weather is a complete nightmare.
Any holiday horror stories to report?
We’ve had the usual delays and some of our luggage go missing but nothing too bad. I think the worst was probably on our honeymoon when we heading to New York from Las Vegas and missed our scheduled flight from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. This resulted in us having to hop on a flight to San Francisco instead before heading to New York.
If you do go on holiday, are you a “sit by the pool all day” kind or person, or a “we need to get out and explore” kind of tourist?
Both. I like getting out and exploring new places but am equally happy to sit by the pool all day topping up my tan and catching up on my reading.
Please help settle an argument. What is the earliest acceptable time to have a pre-holiday pint in the airport pub?
As the saying goes, it’s 6pm somewhere in the world. That said I very rarely drink in the airport as I’m the ‘responsible’ one who has to get two small children and a husband who’s scared of flying on the plane and off again at the other side. My holiday officially starts once we’ve reached the resort and our bags are safely in the room.
How are you with flying? Love it, hate it or a bit nonplussed by it all?
My first holiday abroad was when I was 4 and as a family we went abroad nearly every year after until I was old enough to travel by myself. I’ve pretty much grown up with flying so it doesn’t phase me at all.
What has been your favourite holiday that you’ve ever been on?
This is a difficult one! There have been three holidays that stick in my mind. The first was to Santorini, one of the Greek Islands. We went for a friend’s wedding and spent a week exploring the island, chilling by the pool and just generally having a good time.
The second one was for my 30th when we went to Las Vegas for 10 days. We went with my eldest (who was 10), my parent and my in-laws and had an absolutely amazing time. We visited all the hotels, the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and The Grand Canyon.
My final holiday choice was last year when we took our two youngest to Menorca for a week. It was the first time the two of them had been abroad and they absolutely loved it.
Where would you absolutely love to go, that you haven’t been yet?
Oooh another difficult one. My travel bucket list reads a little like an atlas so it might be easier to just flip to a page and stick a pin in. However, if you are making me choose one place it would have to be Florida as I’d love to take the kids to Disney and all the other parks.
What is your favourite summer holiday memory from when you were a kid?
I was a complete water baby. I loved swimming so most of my days were spent in the pool or in the sea and most of my memories are related to this in one way or another.
What is the first song on your summer anthems playlist?
It’s a toss-up between Holiday by Madonna and Summertime by Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff
Camping (be it in the wilderness or in your back garden when you were a kid). Your thoughts?
Confession time. I’ve never actually been camping!! It was never something that appealed to my parents growing up and I think that has just rubbed off on me. We did consider it once a few years ago but never actually got around to it. There’s something about sleeping in a tent that makes me go all shivery.
Do you tan easily, or are you a brilliant shade of toothpaste white wherever you go?
Given time I tend to go a lovely golden brown. However, I also have a tendency to turn pink, especially on my nose and shoulders. I’ve learnt over the years that for me to not burn I need to tan steadily and keep the bits of me that don’t see daylight very often, such as my stomach and the tops of my legs, topped up with suntan lotion.
What attraction or event would you recommend people go to this summer?
I’m going to say Legoland. This is one of the places we are hoping to get to over the summer holidays. The kids ask every time they see the advert on TV so we are going to try to make a long weekend of it.
Finally, let us have you best tip for a stress-free holiday?
Checklists and planning. I over plan and have lists for everything from packing lists to what to take when we go to the caravan. That said I’m also prepared to completely ditch any plans I’ve made if something changes so flexibility is also necessary.
